Canary Islands on road to recovery.

Canary Island sunsetThe Canarian vice president Jose Manuel Soria said that the islands are on the 'right track' on the road to financial recover. His statement was based on two factors, new cars and overnight tourist stay duration. New vehicles coming on to the road rose by 11% in the first month of 2010, this compares very well to the fall of 31% for the same month a year ago. The figures for overnight stay duration are also looking good this year compared to last. Last year they dropped by 8.2% compared to a rise early in this year of 3.7%.

playa blanca beachPlaya Blanca in Lanzarote has been the fastest growing tourism location on the island of Lanzarote. Appealing mainly to families, elderly and luxury clients its popularity shines on. The area has the most five star hotels on the island. There is also an appealing selection of property for sale from budget apartments to high end luxury villas. The upper end of the market is where the greatest price reductions can be found.


New harbour and Marina coming to Corralejo

Corralejo marinaThe contract for the extention and improvement to Corralejo harbour has been awarded and is expected to take two years to complete. The project will improve and extend the ferry piers, increase the number of moorings for pleasure craft and provide better boat yard facilities.
As well as the existing marina berths the new marina will provide 650 berths for yachts which will be sheltered behind a huge curved breakwater.
Corralejo harbour on the north coast of Fuerteventura is one of the busiest in the Canaries with close to a million passengers a year using the short ferry link to Lanzarote and the project will ensure that increasing passenger demand can be met. The harbour Playa Blanca in Lanzarote will also be extended and improved to allow easier access for the ferries whose entrance at the moment can only be described as tight.


Canarian tourism up

A recent survey has revealed some good news for the canary islands. The Canary Islands is the most popular tourist destination in Spain. The Canarian year round climate cannot be beaten and for guaranteed weather this is the place to come. Another interesting fact is that visitors are also spending more money when holidaying in the Canary Islands.


"I need Spain"

The new slogan for Spanish tourism is… wait for it… ‘I need Spain’. The idea is that this slogan will help to unify Spain’s position as a leading tourist destination. Spain wants to become known as a ‘first class’ tourist destination, moving into the arena of an all year around cultural holiday location. The idea and slogan for the new campaign was uncovered recently by Spanish Secretary of state for Tourism.
This new image of Spain is intended to be publicized across over 40 countries, the expected audience is more than 400 million people. Over the last two years Spain has increased her promotional budget by 20 per cent.
The previous campaign had a slogan of ‘Smile you’re in Spain’ and was targeted to an audience of only 100 million. The new campaign is selling Spain as a lifestyle destination. Spain currently receives over 50 million tourists per year.


Iberia eases up on baggage

Iberia recently announced an introduction of an extra 60 euro charge for each extra item of baggage from flights between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. The Canarian government were up in arms over this and put this point of view to Iberian bosses. Finally Iberian Airlines responded by allowing up to a 23 kilo limit the first piece of baggage and a 10 kilo limit on hand luggage. Additional pieces of baggage, up to the 32 kilo limit, will cost 15 euros for residents and 60 euros for non residents.


The Easter holidays saw and great influx of cruise ships visiting the Canaries. Local businesses welcome this as the ships dock at each island allowing visitors time to explore and grab some local bargains.
The easter period saw over 10 cruise liners docking letting off a total of almost 50,000 visitors. The majority of these visitors we arriving in the ports of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tenerife proving to be the most popular destination hosting over 27,000 visitors.
