Retirement villa in Gran Canaria

The Pionteks find a perfect retirement villa in Arguineguin, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, property Arguineguin,

Enough was enough! After eight weeks of hospitalization Maria Piontek knew the time had come to bring retirement forward and swap Boltons dirt and rain, for sun and clean. But where to find the blue skies and clean air of which she and her husband, Gunter dreamed? Maria and Gunter had no hesitation in looking to their beloved island of Gran Canaria which they had visited on at least seven occasions over the previous ten years or so.

As soon as Marias doctors allowed her to fly, they jetted off to Las Palmas and headed for the coast where they fell in love with the place and the people all over again. With just four days before they were due to fly back to the UK they came across Cardenas Estate Agents in Arguinegun. Once they ventured through the doors they instinctively knew they had struck lucky. The Pionteks shared their wish list with Carolina, the Managing Director, who listened attentively as they described how they were looking for something countrified with plenty of greenery and ideally with sea views. They wanted a manageable space that looked like a house, not a box or a high-rise. Carolina told them all about the plans for a new complex called Loma Verde in an area of Arguineguin called Patalavaca, and detailed the financial advantages of buying off plan , i.e. before the property is actually built or completed. Purchasing a property this way would mean meeting a series of pre-designated payments over a set period of time and could potentially save them thousands of euros in the long run. Eager to find out more, the Pionteks asked to view the site. Any fears they may secretly have harboured were soon dispelled as they were shown around a beautiful show home and given access to artist impressions and plans. It made visualising the finished complex easy and oh! the location. Set against the mountains with fabulous sea views the complex seemed like a higgledy-piggledy village that had always stood. Maria and Gunter could immediately see their future amongst the tropical vegetation and swaying palms.

Back at the office Maria and Gunter confirmed that they definitely wanted to go ahead and purchase a one bedroom apartment on the Loma Verde complex. The staff were due to have a Christmas party, but happily downed paper hats and stopped everything to process the paperwork and translate the necessary documents. Meanwhile the Pionteks unleashed their credit card and organised payment of the small deposit required to stake their claim. They flew back to the UK full of excitement and looking forward to their new lives ahead.

It was back in the UK that it all went horribly wrong! The Pionteks had planned to take out a small mortgage in order to meet the requirements of the payment plan that had been set out for them. But unfortunately the building society in England just would not play ball. Naturally, panic set in! which was when Cardenas came to the rescue by putting them in touch with a Spanish bank who were happy to allow them to borrow on the strength of the sale of their house in the UK. Both the agent and the owners of the complex went out on a limb for the Pionteks and a revised payment plan was approved and implemented on Maria and Gunter's behalf. They truly felt like they had their hands held all the way, we cannot fault Cardenas attention to detail. The agents organised the NIF number (Spanish tax code), registered them with the local town hall (empadronamiento) and also sorted out other details such as the water rates. They bent over backwards for us, enthuses Maria. The day at the public notary to sign and seal the purchase of their new home was an exercise in efficiency and simplicity, made that much easier thanks to the presence of the bilingual agent, and the bank manager who went through all the relevant documents in English just to ensure all was clear and understood. The actual signing was the most expensive 3 seconds of my life, laughs Maria who gleefully accepted the bottle of fizz Cardenas had presented them by way of congratulations. In a little under two years, and with a great help from their chosen professionals, Maria and Gunter had succeeded in making their dreams come true dirt and rain, never again!

The Pionteks purchase was plainly not a straightforward case; payment deadlines were overshot and patience were required of the vendors. Whatever you do, advises Maria, make sure you get your finances sorted before doing anything! But theirs is a story that serves to prove that hiccoughs can be overcome with unwavering understanding and good communication and that having the services of a professional estate agent on their side, can mean the difference between serious disappointment and a happy ending.

Indeed, Maria and Gunters only regret is that they did nott make the move earlier. After 25 years, they have now wound up the family business back in Bolton and are enjoying the stress-free lifestyle afforded by their beautiful retirement home in the Canaries. As Maria says, few other places offer the chance to sleep out on the veranda in November. All the properties on the complex are south, southwest-facing and therefore enjoy superb views of the Atlantic as well as all-day sunshine and stunning sunsets. With Gunter pottering in the garage-turned-office below, Maria finds inspiration in the sea views, the rabbits bobbing on the lush hillside to one side and the swoop of the resident kestrel as she designs her greeting cards Created Just for You, by Maria. They will soon be able to take refreshing dips in either of the two pools currently being built as part of the final phase of construction. The beaches and local facilities such as shops, restaurants, bars, pharmacy and bus routes are but a ten minute walk away. When they do choose to venture forth from their piece of paradise they are secure in the knowledge that their home is tucked behind closed walls to ensure uninvited guests are kept at bay.

Happy retirement Gunter and Maria!
