Puerto del Carmen improvements Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's busiest tourist resort. Last year it got a golf course, this year work has started on a new marina and the seafront is undergoing pedestrianisation.
Thirty years ago a small fishing village called Tiosa was transformed by package tourism into Puerto del Carmen, the most popular resort on the Island. It was the place to go, of the moment, a leading light in Canarian tourist resorts.
Now whilst the Rolling stones are still cool, happening and of the moment even all these years later, despite the ravages of time having had its effect on them visually, Puerto del Carmen is starting to look a bit of a has been in comparison to the way it looked in its hay day.
Luckily however the Islands authorities are now forging ahead with plans to rejuvenate Puerto del Carmen in a bid to once again compete with other top holiday destinations. An important element of these new plans is the creation of a new marina in the old town harbour area. Work is already underway to create the marina with jetties and berthing for luxury motor yachts and sail boats with completion expected around May 2009.
Many people involved in property feel these exciting developments will benefit the local property market, increasing both demand and property values in a similar way to the success that the nearby Puerto Calero marina project had on the local market.
Another important project is in Avenida de las Playas where plans have been drawn up to improve the balance between cars and people by making part of the area a pedestrian zone. There are also plans to harmonise the appearance of shop fronts, fascias and signage along the strip in order to improve the overall image and feel of the area.
It is hoped that this multi million Euro project, in conjunction with the opening of the new golf course on the outskirts of Puerto del Carmen will re-freshen and boost the areas appeal to both holiday makers and those looking to invest in property in Lanzarote.
